Courses
Mounted Archery
Getting started in mounted archery? We can streamline you into using a bow and arrow while astride with solid and proven riding techniques, strong and stable bow drawing mechanics, and safe and convenient weapons handling.
Are you already experienced in horseback archery? Come try something outside the typical competition circles, with unit tactics, new games, and mixed weapons, as well as techniques for drawing war weight bows.
We use Asiatic style bows—shelfless, short, primarily static recurve bows, sometimes called “horse bows”—and Asiatic archery techniques, shooting off the draw hand side with thumb draw and thumb ring, or finger draw.
Cavalry Sword
The sword has been the iconic weapon of the warrior since the Iron Age. Learn how to wield swords meant for use on horseback while riding and using your horse to deliver blows.
Cavalry Lance
The lance is a spear designed for use from horseback. We cover handling, retrieval, carriage, targeting and striking, fencing, and throwing.
Formations & Unit Tactics
Develop esprit de corps with your fellow riders, learn how a more organized force can overwhelm a less organized one, develop awareness of riders and weapons in motion in a confined space, and have fun with functional, robust tactics and formations.
The Bombproof Riding System
The riding system we teach to our fighters is the same as what we teach to our endurance riders for the Mongol Derby and Gaucho Derby. All of our derby riders have finished. It’s functional, it’s robust, it works when you’re tired or hurt.
Pressure tested in our Martial art trials and the longest horse races in the world, our Bombproof Riding system has been proven. No fluff, no pomp, no pedantry—just a solid riding system that works for riding in real life.
Testimonials
Huge shoutout to Cain! I’ve learned so much in the last few months! His approach as “rider first” is phenomenal! Making sure we focus on our mounts and HOW we are riding when doing these drills has made me a better rider all around! Recommend signing up for a class if you haven’t already!
Monica
As a martial arts instructor who grew up in a family of semi-professional barrel riders (my sister worked with Martha Josey), I absolutely applaud the work Martial Equestrian is doing in understanding the context and mechanics of cavalry swordsmanship and spearmanship. Doing such an inherently dangerous activity whilst keeping all parties and animals safe is no easy feat. I will enjoy watching this page grow and what Martial Equestrian will bring back to the understanding of historical warfare and the large part these animals played in the wars of men.
